Although I enjoy cooking, in my short experience with it I have only really mastered a handful of recipes. My sister (who just finished cooking school) got all that talent, along with all the singing skills, and the genes for fantastic hair. (Sigh).
Yet, after learning about Scarlet Threads and seeing their line of fair trade aprons, I may have to take up baking.
The story of Scarlet Threads begins in China in 2007. While helping orphans with special needs, they learned that many children become orphans as a direct result of poverty. The family knew they wanted to help further in the community, but they weren’t quite sure how. That is, until, they met their first seamstress in 2009. She was highly skilled, and eager to work to help pay for her family’s needs. This was when their dream to help the community finally materialized. They realized they could succor these women by employing and paying them a fair wage, which could someday alleviate them from poverty.
Since then, they have worked with many seamstresses in their community in China. These seamstresses work directly from their own home, are paid a fair wage, and on top of that they are directly given 5% of the overall profit from Scarlet Threads.
They give another 5% of each sale to the community itself. This aids with school fees, housing improvements, and medical costs for people living in the community.
They have also been able to extend their line to include purses, bags, and childrens’ clothing. Scroll down below for some photos of their pieces, and for an exclusive coupon code that will give you 10% off your order!
